Pada tingkat makro, pendidikan tinggi mempunyai peran strategis dalam proses pembudayaan dan pemberdayaan bangsa Indonesia demi peradaban manusia.

Secara pragmatis-ekonomis, pendidikan tinggi akan mengembangkan komunitas warga terdidik, terampil, berbudaya, dan berakhlak mulia untuk meningkatkan daya saing bangsa. Penyelenggaraan pendidikan tinggi sebagai bagian yang tak terpisahkan dari penyelenggaraan pendidikan nasional tidak dapat dilepaskan dari amanat Pasal 31 Ayat (3) UUD 1945.

Kebebasan akademis dan otonomi pendidikan tinggi sedang dipertaruhkan dalam pembahasan Rancangan Undang-Undang Perguruan Tinggi di DPR. Pemerintah yang diwakili Menteri Pendidikan dan Kebudayaan tampaknya memilih kebijakan memperkuat kontrol negara atas kebebasan akademis dan otonomi perguruan tinggi.

KID's Democracy Schools have been running for more than six years now. Some have completed the three-year term and others are just starting it. Yet the process has taught us many things. The last day opened up with smiles among the already familiar faces. The votes were counted and lo-and­‐behold, the results based approach presented by Irakli Kobalia from NIMD Georgia got the first place, just by a tight margin from the second winner.

Irakli's thank you speech was brief and concise: "Thank you very much. I hope to see you all in Georgia." Through further questioning, Irakli said the venue for the next conference is up to Mieke(Burmeister), but he didn't mind the idea of hosting it in his country.
